Servers are no longer a big ticket item reserved for larger companies with big budgets. A PC-based server can be deployed for certain functions for less than $1000. Some functions, such as a File Server, can be achieved using specialized appliances that cost less than $200!   • Terminal Server - Terminal Servers are used to centralize all the programs that are normally installed on each PC separately within an organization. The advantages of Terminal Servers are many, especially when it comes time to upgrade software, as all software is installed on one PC and shared among the users. Terminal Servers can also be accessed from anywhere in the world through an internet connection, making them ideal for companies with multiple locations, traveling salespeople, or telecommuters.
  • FTP Server - An FTP server is just a file server that makes your files available from anywhere through the internet. A small company might use an FTP server to allow customers to download demonstration media or brochures to the customer's computer or anything else you might want to give away to anyone who wants it.
